Types of Nail Gun Nails

Each type of pneumatic or cordless nailer is designed around a specific nail. The nails are not interchangeable between nailer types. A framing nailer magazine won’t accept roofing nails, and a brad nailer won’t fire finish nails. Here’s how each category breaks down.

Framing Nails

Framing nails are the largest common nail gun nail, designed for structural wood connections: stud-to-plate, header, rim joist, and sheathing applications. They drive 10d to 16d nails, most commonly in 3-1/4” (10d) and 3-1/2” (16d) lengths.

Common framing nail sizes:

·      2” — light structural connections, blocking in tight spaces

·      2-3/8” — sheathing and lighter framing

·      3” — standard framing, engineered lumber connections

·      3-1/4” (10d) — stud-to-plate, standard wall framing

Roofing Nails

Roofing nails are short, wide-head nails designed specifically for roofing shingles, underlayment, and roofing felt. The large flat head is what distinguishes them — it holds roofing materials securely without tearing through them.

Roofing nails are almost exclusively used in coil roofing nailers, which hold 100–120 nails in a coil magazine for high-speed production on roofing applications. Standard roofing nail sizes are 1-3/4” and 1-3/4” to 1-7/8” for standard 3-tab and architectural shingles, though local code may require specific lengths and shank types.

Finish Nails

Brad nails are 18-gauge nails which are thin enough to leave minimal surface marks on trim and delicate wood. They’re used for lightweight finish work: thin casing, cabinet face frames, wainscoting panels, and anywhere you need to minimize the visible nail hole.

Common brad nail sizes:

·      5/8” — very thin trim, small molding details

·      1” — standard face-frame assembly

·      1-1/4” — trim over thin substrates

·      1-1/2” — standard casing and baseboard on drywall

Coil Nails

Coil nails are not a separate nail type by application, they’re a collation format. Coil-collated nails wind into a round magazine rather than a straight strip, which allows a much higher nail capacity per load (typically 120–300 nails vs. 60–80 for strip nails) and a more compact nailer body.

Coil nails are used in coil framing nailers and coil roofing nailers. For framing applications, coil framing nails are available in the same sizes as strip framing nails. Coil roofing nails are the standard format for roofing nailers.


Nail Collation Types

Collation refers to how nails are held together in the magazine. Choosing the right collation is not optional, you must match the nail’s collation type and degree angle to your specific nailer model.

Strip vs. Coil

·      Strip nails load into a straight or angled magazine. They typically hold 60–80 nails per load.

·      Coil nails load into a round drum magazine. They hold 120–300 nails per load which means significantly fewer reloads on high-volume work.

Degree Angle (Framing Nails Only)

·      21-degree — full round head nails, plastic collation. Required for structural applications under many codes (shear wall framing, hurricane-rated connections).

·      28-degree — wire-collated nails, compact magazine. Less common.

·      30-degree — clipped or offset-round head, paper or plastic collation. More compact magazine, easier access in tight framing. Check local code before using clipped-head nails on permitted structural work.

Paper vs. Plastic Collation

·      Paper tape — burns away cleanly on firing, leaves less residue, often preferred for interior work
