Falls, eye injuries, hand lacerations, and noise-induced hearing loss are the leading causes of serious injury in construction. Most of them are preventable with the right personal protective equipment worn consistently, but only if the gear actually fits, is rated for the application, and holds up to daily jobsite use.

Hard Hats
Type I vs. Type II:
· Type I hard hats protect the top of the head only.
· Type II hard hats add lateral impact protection — better for roofing, steel erection, and anywhere debris can come from the side.
For most framing and general construction in Minnesota and Wisconsin, a Class E Type II hard hat covers the full range of hazards on a standard jobsite.
Safety Glasses and Eye Protection
Eye injuries are among the most common and preventable injuries on construction sites. Sawdust, nail gun ricochets, grinding sparks, concrete splatter, and chemical splash all present eye hazards that basic ANSI-rated safety glasses stop entirely.
What to look for:
· ANSI Z87.1 rating — the minimum standard for impact-rated safety glasses. Look for the Z87 marking on the lens or frame.
· Side protection — wrap-around frames or side shields for lateral impact coverage
· Lens tint — clear for indoor/low-light, gray or smoke for outdoor sun conditions, amber for low-contrast environments
· Anti-fog coating — important for crew working in variable temperatures, particularly fall and winter in MN/WI
· Over-glasses (OTG) style — for workers who wear prescription eyewear
Safety glasses are low-cost and high-impact. There’s no reason a crew member should be working without them on an active site. Buying in bulk, multiple pairs per worker removes the excuse of a lost or broken pair.
Work Gloves
Work gloves protect against the most common hand injuries on a construction site: cuts from lumber and metal edges, abrasion from rough materials, and impact from tools and falling objects. They also improve grip on tools and materials in wet or cold conditions which is a real consideration for contractors working through fall and into Minnesota winters.
Glove types for construction:
· General purpose / synthetic leather — the daily-use option for framing, finish work, and material handling. Good dexterity without sacrificing protection.
· Cut-resistant gloves — ANSI/ISEA cut level rated for work around metal studs, sheet metal, or any application with blade or sharp edge exposure
· Impact-resistant gloves — reinforced knuckle protection for demolition, concrete work, and heavy tool use
· Waterproof/insulated gloves — for cold-weather or wet-condition work; important for late-season construction in MN and WI
Fit matters significantly with work gloves. Gloves that are too loose reduce grip and increase fatigue; gloves that are too tight reduce circulation and dexterity. Stock multiple sizes if you’re buying for a crew.
Hi-Vis Vests and High-Visibility Clothing
Hi-vis vests and high-visibility safety apparel are required by OSHA on roadway construction and any site where workers are exposed to vehicle traffic. They’re also standard on larger commercial sites and increasingly common on residential framing jobs where equipment like skid steers and excavators operate alongside foot traffic.
ANSI/ISEA 107 classes:
· Class 1 — minimum visibility. Appropriate for low-speed, low-traffic environments only.
· Class 2 — the most common class for construction. Required near roadways with speeds up to 50 mph and on most commercial sites.
· Class 3 — maximum visibility. Required near high-speed roadways and in low-visibility conditions.
For most contractor work, Class 2 hi-vis vests cover OSHA requirements. If your crews do any roadway or DOT-adjacent work, confirm Class 3 requirements for the specific project.
Hearing Protection
Extended exposure to construction noise from compressors, nail guns, saws, concrete equipment causes cumulative hearing damage that isn’t reversible. OSHA requires hearing protection at sustained noise levels above 90 dB; most construction equipment exceeds that threshold.
Options:
· Disposable foam earplugs — the most common option. High NRR (noise reduction rating), inexpensive, single-use. Best for all-day wear in high-noise environments.
· Reusable earplugs — cost-effective for crews with consistent noise exposure. Require cleaning and periodic replacement.
· Earmuffs — better for intermittent high-noise tasks (grinding, chipping). Easier to put on and remove than earplugs.
NRR rating is the number to check, the higher NRR means more noise reduction. For most heavy construction, NRR 25+ is the practical minimum.
Fall Protection Equipment
Falls are the leading cause of fatality in construction, and OSHA fall protection requirements apply at 6 feet on most residential construction and 4 feet in general industry. Fall protection equipment includes harnesses, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines (SRLs), and anchorage points.
Core components of a personal fall arrest system:
· Full-body harness — distributes fall arrest forces across the chest, shoulders, and thighs. Must be inspected before every use.
· Lanyard or SRL — connects the harness to the anchor point. Shock-absorbing lanyards reduce peak arrest force; SRLs allow more freedom of movement.
· Anchor point — rated at minimum 5,000 lbs per attached worker. Roof anchors, beam clamps, and horizontal lifelines all qualify depending on the application.
